Teacher Series: Ryan Holiday

I once had the pleasure of seeing Ryan Holiday speak. He is a generational author and teacher of wisdom and still only 36 years old. His mentor Robert Greene was ill, so Ryan spoke with a mediator. I had the privilege of asking him a question after his talk that I can’t forget his answer to.

I told him the quote that started this blog: “If by keeping the old warm one can provide understanding of the new, one is fit to be a teacher.” – Confucius

I explained how I see him and Robert as true teachers who are keeping the old warm and who inspire myself and others. I asked Ryan, “Being a true teacher yourself, what makes a good teacher?” He told me, “Tell a good story.”

If you’ve ever read Ryan’s works, or his mentor Robert’s, you’d remember how they use stories, historical examples, biographical accounts of individuals, relationships, and situations to help us understand our world and ourselves. They keep old stories, wisdom, and history warm for us to provide understanding of our new world.

Ryan has my undying respect for what he is achieving and for his service to the Old and New. If you desire greater understanding, peace, strength, serenity, and a guide and call to action to live a greater life, circle around his campfire of wisdom and listen to the stories.
