The Little Things

We say it’s the little things that count in life. Doing the small things with ourselves, our loved ones, friends, and community that make life worth living.

However, these little things are the big things.

To see World Peace, effectiveness in a democracy, progress in debates and sides in a democracy, resolution and “coming together” between warring factions – these big things are made up of LITTLE THINGS.

It will rarely be big, grandiose changes that “make things work”: a change in leaders, a change in parties, revolutions, if one side wins and the other loses. This is almost never successful change, but more of the same useless nonsense that gets normal people nowhere and keeps shameful people in positions of influence.

No. It is the ability for each individual in a society and/or democracy to treat each other individual with understanding and empathy that leads to truly beneficial change. It is these little things that count.

Each of us, not fighting and hating and roiling our eyes and losing patience with one another, not listening to the same echo chambers of hateful opinions that give us a high and a rush of sweet rage, but instead realizing most individuals are like us, trying their best to make their lives and our society work, and cutting each other some slack so we can all move forward together…..these are the little things. The little changes in perspective, little acts of courage to NOT hate, but to show understanding for those different than us, yet which are part of the same large group.

These are the little things. Yet in their importance to bring a better world to life, they are anything but small.

These are the BIG THINGS.

So let us all be BIG, and do the little things to change the world.
