“The superior man understands what is right; the inferior man understands what will sell.” – Confucius
It is important to earn a living and to understand how to earn a profit. How else does one expect to stave off poverty and secure peace of mind through financial security?
It is also noble to work hard and secure wealth for you and your loved ones, and to do so by just means.
However, what if such skill and knowledge stands alone, without wisdom, philosophy, humaneness, without principles? We find the superior capitalist and the inferior man.
Profit is a means to not struggle. It is not an end goal where you boast and lord profit over others, displaying it with pride. Understanding what will sell, that is good. But it is not great.
What is great is to understand what is good in this life. What will create a better future, remove pain and suffering from this world, and lift the soul and spirit of humanity. We can profit all we want, but without thought for what is good, what is right, what is noble, without reaching out for that which is higher, without noble principles……money will be our highest good, and a cheap one at that.
Strive for profit, understand what will sell.
But never forget to strive for the good, to understand what is right.
For that will be our principle profit in life.
